MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian Moskva destroyer, which had provided support to air groups in Syria during operations against the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) terrorist group, returned to Sevastopol from the Mediterranean Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry’s head of Black Sea Fleet’s information department said Saturday.
"Today, the guards missile cruiser Moskva… returned to Sevastopol after completing tasks in the Mediterranean," Capt. 1st Class Vyacheslav Trukhachev said.
The Moskva, armed with the Fort air defense system, provided security for Russian Aerospace Forces’ aviation groups in Syria.
Russia launched a military campaign against the Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia and many other countries, on September 30 at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
