MEXICO (Sputnik) — Clashes between prisoners of the Chimaltenango prison in central Guatemala claimed the lives of at least six inmates and injured six more, the prison’s warden Alexander Toro said.
"The quarrel started on the basis of hostile relations between members of different gangs, the cause of death of six prisoners is being investigated," Toro said Tuesday, as quoted by the NTN24 broadcaster.
Riot police is currently working on site to stable the conflict, the prison director added.
The Chimaltenango jail currently holds 520 inmates, which is over three times higher its maximum capacity. The issue often leads to riots and clashes between prisoners.
