The US Navy has given Lockheed Martin a $28.8 million contract for changes in fuel tanks of the ultra-expensive F-35 Lightning II fighter-bomber, the most expensive aircraft project in history, the Department of Defense announced.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company is being awarded a $28,842,000 delivery order "for air vehicle retrofit modifications associated with the F-35A fuel tank… in support of the Air Force, and… Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, and Norway," the announcement said on Tuesday.

On December 21, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company received an additional $1,171 billion contract to maintain the planned production schedule for 80 F-35A combat aircraft.

The F-35 program has attracted widespread criticism for its cost overruns and allegedly being unable to totally fulfil the capabilities claimed for it in all its various roles.

The F-35 program is expected to cost $1.5 trillion over its 55-year lifespan, making it the most expensive US weapons program.
