BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Bosnia and Herzegovina has officially informed Brussels of its intention to apply for European Union membership soon, Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said Thursday.
“The Bosnian authorities contacted the Dutch chair this week and informed of its intention of applying for EU membership soon,” Koenders said.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Chairman of the Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdic said in December that the country would apply for the EU membership within two months.
The Stabilization and Association Council between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union held its first meeting in earlier that month.
The first stage of the country's accession to the bloc, which includes the creation of a free trade zone — regulated by the Stabilization and Association agreement — came into force last June.
