The governments of Russia and Ukraine should cooperate to reach an agreement on Kiev’s $3 billion debt to Moscow, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Communications Director Gerry Rice told reporters on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Wednesday that the Russian Finance Ministry will file a lawsuit against Ukraine’s unpaid arrears.

"We continue to encourage Ukraine and Russia to achieve a cooperative solution that contributes to the financing and the debt objectives of the program," Rice stated.

Gamblers Rejoice: Ukraine's Debt to Russia Offers All-or-Nothing Prospects
On January 5, the Ukrainian Finance Ministry said Kiev was ready to defend its interests during the proceedings on the restructuring of the country's $3-billion debt to Russia.

The Russian Finance Ministry announced on December 31 that Ukraine had defaulted as it had missed the 10-day deadline to repay the debt.

Russia disagrees with Ukraine's stance that the bond is part of an external commercial debt, arguing that the bond is a loan provided by one country to another.
