BALI (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, at least 10 people were killed in a series of explosions in the downtown area of Jakarta carried out by several assailants, who traveled on motorcycles carrying rifles and explosives.
At least one of the blasts occurred near the United Nations headquarters.
Local police regained control over the attacked areas just hours after the attacks and gunfire took place. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks on Jakarta.
"Since Thursday 5 p.m local time [1:00 GMT] the status of the highest degree of security readiness has been introduced on the entire territory of Indonesia," Anton Charliyan was quoted by the local Kompas newspaper.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo, described the attacks as terrorism acts and called on the nation not to panic.
