A series of explosions hit the Indonesian capital, leaving at least 10 people dead and another 10 injured.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The European Union supports Indonesia in the fight against extremism and expresses its condolences to the families and friends of the victims of Thursday's blasts in Jakarta, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said.

"The attack in the heart of Jakarta today is tragic reminder that the threat of terrorism is global and has to be tackled globally. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims. We stand firm by the Indonesian government and its people in their fight against violence and extremism," Mogherini said in a statement published on the European Union’s website.

She added that she would express her personal condolences to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in a phone call later in the day.

Earlier on Thursday, a series of explosions hit the Indonesian capital, leaving at least 10 people dead and another 10 injured. The Indonesian police spokesman, Budi Gunawan, said that "most probably" Daesh (Islamic State), which is outlawed in Russia and the United States, was behind the attacks. However no extremist groups so far has claimed responsibility for what Indonesian President Joko Widodo has described as "an act of terrorism".
