MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the report, nationals from the Community of Independent States (CIS) and the Eastern Partnership countries, mostly Ukrainians, Russians and Moldovans accounted for almost half of the total detections. The other half of illegal border-crossings involved mostly refugees from Afghanistan, Vietnam and Syria.
Europe is currently struggling to cope with a massive refugee influx, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict-torn countries of the Middle East and North Africa in search of asylum in stable and wealthy EU states, such as Denmark.
The total number of detections of illegal border crossings in the European Union in the first 11 months of 2015 reached 1.55 million, according to Frontex.
