In July, Guzman escaped from what was purported to be one of Mexico's most secure prisons. Mexican authorities recaptured him on Friday.
US officials have said the United States has filed more than one extradition request for Guzman. It could take a year or longer to extradite Guzman to the United States.
News reports from Mexico claimed that, after his recapture, Mexican authorities served Guzman with copies of two outstanding US extradition requests.
US Attorney offices in San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas, have sent formal extradition requests for Guzman to Mexican authorities, Reuters reported. However, other US Attorney offices with cases against Guzman – including Chicago, Miami, Brooklyn and Manhattan – are likely to seek to try him first after his extradition.
If there are competing claims to try Guzman, Justice Department headquarters, and ultimately US Attorney General Loretta Lynch, may decide who tries him first.
