One weapons store in Frankfurt is selling pepper spray under the slogan “Always at an arm’s length” inspired by Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker who inflamed a nationwide debate about migrants and sexual harassment by suggesting that women can protect themselves from men on the streets by keeping them more than an arm’s length away.
Arms retailers in Berlin, Stuttgart, Munich, Hamburg, Dresden and Dusseldorf said they had already run out of their stock of Tasers with the Akah internet company saying they had sold out their entire inventory of battery-charged electrical shockers.
Unlike air pistols and popguns, buying a Taser in Germany does not require any special permission.
Meanwhile, Cologne police said that 32 people, 22 of whom refugees were being held on suspicion of involvement in the New Year attacks.
The city’s police chief has been fired and Mayor Henriette Reker accused law enforcement of holding back vital information about the December 31 events.
