MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iran has freed four Iranian-American prisoners, including Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian charged with espionage, under a deal with the United States, a Tehran court said on Saturday.
"Based on an approval of the Supreme National Security Council and the general interests of the Islamic Republic, four Iranian prisoners with dual-nationality were freed today within the framework of a prisoner swap deal," the Iranian capital’s court said, as quoted by the Fars news agency.
Under the deal, the four prisoners will be exchanged with seven Iranian-US nationals serving their sentence at US jails, according to Prosecutor Abbas Jaafari.
The agreement also stipulates that international criminal police body Interpol must stop prosecution of 14 other Iranian nationals.
Rezaian was detained in July 2014 in Iran’s capital. He was convicted of espionage in closed proceedings and held in Evin Prison in northwestern Tehran.
