The journalist recalls that was when he realized “a great collective anti-Western Islamist movement was emerging in many Islamic countries”, however he had not seen anyone who was prepared to deal with it.
“I said then that in the twentieth century there had already been Communism, Fascism, Nazism and now Islamism was exploding, but I was looked at with bewilderment,” he writes in his article for il Giornale newspaper.
“The Americans then followed up with their fight against the secular regimes of Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi and Assad however slowly realizing that after they topple these regimes, these are the Islamists who come to power.”
The Americans tried to fight them with the help of the Arab countries, but it was actually them [the Arab countries] who armed and financed the Islamists, he says.
“So, the great collective Islamist movement, after Iran, has effectively conquered Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, has infiltrated Turkey, Indonesia, Africa, and is now threatening Saudi Arabia and is penetrating into Europe,” he admits.
“And the Americans are powerless.”
The journalist regrets that Europe has followed the Americans in their campaign against Russia for such a long time, especially as the US continued its Cold War against Russia and threatened it with NATO even after the collapse of the USSR. The anti-Russian sanctions have been created to separate Europe from Russia, which have always been natural allies, politically and culturally.
Washington has not identified Islamism as an enemy and has continued fighting what would be their most natural ally.
To make up for all its mistakes, he says, Europe must now restore its ties with Russia, end the Cold War, open up a joint Western front of friendship and trust, otherwise it will struggle to survive in the coming global changes.
