BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – In late December and early January, Poland adopted new laws, including a judicial reform and a legislation giving the government power to appoint the heads of public TV and radio, as well as civil service directors. The changes triggered widespread opposition from EU leaders as contravening democratic values.
On January 13, the European Commission announced the beginning of a bilateral dialogue with the country's government on the controversial reforms. Unless the negotiation is efficient, the commission may declare that there is a clear threat of a serious breach of EU values in Poland under Article 7 of the EU Treaty.
The final draft resolution on Polish reforms is expected to be adopted at a European Parliament plenary session in February, as participants of the session will vote on the document.
