MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is ready, if necessary, to organize a presidential election in the organization on May 3, it was reported in the media on Tuesday.
According to the French L'Equipe newspaper, the election could take place at the organization’s next congress in Budapest.
Last month, the current president of the organization, 60-year-old Michel Platini, was banned along with FIFA President Joseph Blatter by FIFA’s Independent Ethics Committee Adjudicatory Chamber from any football-related activities for a period of eight years over corruption allegations.
In late September, the Swiss Office of the Attorney General launched a probe into corruption claims against Blatter over making a "disloyal payment" of $2.05 million to Platini in 2011 at the expense of FIFA, for work allegedly performed in 1999-2002.
FIFA will elect a new president on February 26, 2016.
