WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Carlin, who announced the guilty plea, said Hamidi received training from al-Qaeda in northwestern Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas in early 2008.
"Ali Alvi al-Hamidi, 31, a Yemeni national, pleaded guilty today to conspiring to murder US nationals abroad, conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaeda and receiving military-type training from al-Qaeda," the department said.
He fought alongside the Taliban insurgency against the US-led NATO coalition forces in Afghanistan later that spring and summer, Carlin added.
Hamidi is reportedly due to be sentenced on June 3.
