Canada will continue to provide military support to a US-led coalition against Daesh jihadist group, despite a decision to halt airstrikes on the militants’ positions, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In November, Trudeau said that all Canadian aircraft would be withdrawn from the anti-Daesh operation in Syria and Iraq by March 31, 2016.

“We continue to be committed to be part, militarily, of the coalition against ISIL,” Trudeau said at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss town of Davos.

According to the Canadian leader, his country decided to end the airstrikes in exchange for another way of military involvement, such as training and intelligence on the ground.

“Over the past ten years, Canada developed a tremendous level of expertise in training [fighters]…We definitely have much to contribute on the helping local militias and local troops be more effective in the direct fight,” Trudeau added.

The international US-led coalition has been launching airstrikes against the ISIL group, outlawed in many countries including Russia and the United States, in both Syria and Iraq since 2014.
