WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In November, the US Air Force began carrying out air patrols from Turkey’s base at Incirlik, approximately 62 miles from the Syrian border. Earlier in September, Turkey gave the United States authority to fly manned and unmanned flights out of Incirlik.
"The two leaders pledged to deepen cooperation in the fight against terrorism and reiterated their shared goal of degrading and ultimately destroying ISIL [Islamic State]," the release stated on Tuesday.
Obama, the release added, also condemned recent attacks by militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) against Turkish government security forces and stressed the need for de-escalation.
The Obama administration has previously called Turkey, a NATO member for more than 60 years, a key partner in the fight against the Daesh, which is outlawed in numerous countries, including in Russia.
