The UK Home Office launched an investigation into claims that doors of refugee asylum centers are being painted red in order to make them distinctive for abuse, UK Minister for Security and Immigration James Brokenshire said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, The Times newspaper revealed that refugees residing in the English north-eastern city of Middlesbrough had repeatedly complained their identifiable accommodation made them targets of abuse, as some 155 asylum centers had red front doors.

"I have commissioned Home Office officials to conduct an urgent audit of asylum seeker housing in the north-east. If we find any evidence of discrimination against asylum seekers it will be dealt with immediately as any such behavior will not be tolerated," Brokenshire told British lawmakers during a parliamentary session.

Europe is struggling to find a solution to its massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa. The EU border agency Frontex detected over 1.55 million illegal border crossings in 2015.
