The United States has extended for a year the national emergency with respect to foreign terrorists seeking to affect the peace process in the Middle East, President Barack Obama said in a letter to the US Congress.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Former President Bill Clinton declared the national emergency on January 23, 1995. However, the issue of terrorist attacks has not been resolved since then, according to the letter.

"The national emergency declared with respect to foreign terrorists who threaten to disrupt the Middle East peace process is to continue in effect beyond January 23, 2016," Obama stated on Wednesday.

The president underscored that acts of terrorism continue to pose "an unusual and extraordinary threat" to US security, foreign policy as well as economy.
