WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — McCain added that the US Army was "essentially organized and equipped as it was in the 1980s."
"Meanwhile, the Army is woefully behind on modernization. The Army must modernize for the harsh realities of 21st century warfare," McCain warned during a US Senate Armed Services Committee hearing to consider the nomination of the next US Army secretary.
McCain’s remarks come as the US military is struggling to pay for major expenses over the next decade for much needed upgrades across the service branches. By the mid-2020s, the United States is expected to need more than $700 billion to modernize its nuclear triad.
In recent months, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has been trying to persuade Congress to get rid of the automatic sequestration process that imposes major automatic structural cuts on the country’s military.
