PRAGUE (Sputnik) — The Czech president criticized the idea of European authorities to create a joint limited border protection agency.
"I support this idea, that, similarly to Afghanistan and other countries, there was a joint NATO headquarters, which would protect the borders of the European Union," Zeman said in an interview with the Czech Parlamentni listy portal.
"What is being proposed today, a division of 1,500 people, caricature EU Border Guard, which would make sense only if we come to the conclusion that the armies of European NATO countries are composed of only 1,500 people," Zeman added.
In December, the European Commission unveiled a plan to set up, by late June 2016, a new 1,500-person border and coastguard agency with the "right to intervene" in EU member states overwhelmed by the migrant influx. The new body will have the duty of sending undocumented migrants back to their home countries.
