A Sinai militant group that has pledged allegiance to the Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for a recent attack in the Egyptian capital, local media reported on Friday.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — On Thursday, a blast went off in the El Haram neighborhood of Cairo. According to various estimates, between seven and 10 people were killed, while some 20 were injured. Later that day, reports emerged in the media that the suicide bombers who carried out the attack might have been affiliated to Daesh.

The Wilayat Sinai (Sinai Province) militant group started to prepare for the Cairo attack about a month ago, renting an apartment in El Haram and allegedly planning to preform various attacks in Cairo up until the end of January, the Addiyar news portal reported.

The Sinai Province militant group pledged allegiance to Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia and many other countries, in November 2014.

The group is notorious for mostly targeting military and security forces in the region. Recently, the group has also expanded its operations outside Sinai, notably targeting Egypt's Western Desert which is relatively popular with tourists.

Egypt has been regularly conducting anti-terrorist operations in North Sinai for the last two years, in particular against the Sinai Province, previously known as Ansar Bait al-Maqdis.
