BERLIN (Sputnik) — The much-anticipated talks between Damascus officials and the Syrian opposition were expected to take place on January 25. Earlier in the day, the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) said that the talks were likely to be postponed for a few days for practical reasons.
"We have a common interest that these task start as soon as possible," Merkel told reporters in Berlin.
Following several rounds of international talks on settling the Syrian conflict, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2254 on December 18, which endorses a road map for a peace process in the country. The resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire and sets out a January deadline for UN-facilitated talks to begin between the Syrian government and opposition members.
