GROZNY (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, media reported about a million university students, journalists and other activists from all cities of the Chechen Republic and other regions of Russia took to the streets of Grozny.
"5,000 law enforcement personnel maintained security at the rally. More than 800,000 people participated in the rally. The event went off without incident," the source told RIA Novosti.
Last week, Kadyrov said that the so-called "non-system opposition" was trying to capitalize on the difficult economic situation in Russia. According to him, such people should be treated as "traitors" and prosecuted "because of their subversive activities."
The statements triggered a wave of criticism from opposition members.
