Everyone knows Maria Sharapova is a big-time winner. Today she had her 600th win of her professional career, as she beat Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1 in a pretty tough match that lasted two hours and 14 minutes.
"Oh, wow, I've won 600 matches? Oh boy. Is this a friendly reminder that I'm getting old?" — the 29-year-old joked when a court interviewer congratulated her after the game.
The milestone comes following a 14-year-long career, which started in 2002 when Sharapova was just 14 years old.
If the Russian tennis star beats Bencic, she might meet her arch-rival Serena Williams, a true powerhouse in the world of women's professional tennis. The match-up between Sharapova and Williams would certainly be an exciting match, especially considering that it was Williams who bested the Russian in last year's Australian Open final.
Formerly the best female tennis player, Sharapova is currently ranked number 5 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA)
Sharapova was born in Siberia, but when she was nine her parents sent her to train at a tennis academy in Florida. After years of hard work and dedication, Sharapova made her professional debut in 2001 at the age of 14 and her star has been shining brightly ever since.
