US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel coordinated their plans to accelerate the Minsk process in Ukraine and to lead global relief efforts for Syrian refugees in a phone conversation, the White House said in a read-out.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Moreover, Obama and Merkel also discussed ways to further bolster the economic relationship between Europe and the United States, according to the White House.‎

"On Ukraine, the president and the chancellor underscored their firm commitment to accelerate the full implementation of the Minsk agreements by all sides," the read-out stated on Thursday.

The two leaders also discussed the European Union’s response to the refugee crisis, including the upcoming Syria donors’ conference in London on February 4, the read out said. They agreed to try and "galvanize" global efforts to address the humanitarian crisis.

"The president expressed support for the Chancellor’s leadership on the refugee crisis, and discussed with her his plan to host a leader-level Global Refugees Summit on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September," the read out noted.
