Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday denied a media report that Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Financial Times earlier reported, citing two senior Western intelligence officials, that Putin had sent the now deceased director of Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU), Col. Gen. Igor Sergun, to relay the message to Assad that the Kremlin believed it was time for him to go.

"No. It's not so," Peskov told reporters in Moscow.
