MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Up to 40 out of 100 inmates were recaptured in the coastal Brazilian city of Recife’s second mass prison escape this week, local media reported.
"The intelligence service had managed to quell three attempted escapes before, but this time it was not possible. We need more investment in security in penitentiaries,” Secretary of Resocialization Joao Carvalho told the city’s Diario de Pernambuco publication Saturday.
Carvalho was cited as saying only 10 guards were in charge of security of more than 2,000 inmates at the time of the escape.
One prisoner died in hospital and another death was reported to be from a bullet to the neck, according to the newspaper.
On Wednesday, 53 inmates escaped from the Barreto Campelo prison after unidentified gunmen exchanged gunfire with prison guards. Eleven of the inmates have been recaptured.
