NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Jailed Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko has requested post-operative medication just days after he underwent an unscheduled surgery, but US prison officials have denied the request, Yaroshenko’s attorney Alexey Tarasov told Sputnik.
"[Yaroshenko] has turned to the medical office at the Fort Dix facility and once again requested medication that was prescribed to him by doctors at the hospital where he had the operation," Tarasov told Sputnik on Monday. "Again, just as before, Yaroshenko was denied the medication."
On Thursday, Yaroshenko, underwent an unscheduled surgery in a Trenton, New Jersey hospital after repeatedly complaining of health problems.
Since the surgery, Tarasov noted that Yaroshenko was required to take various medications at the request of a physician.
"Yaroshenko is adamant about the fact that when he was at the hospital at Trenton, the physician at the hospital had prescribed him some pills, cream as well as some other medications that he has not seen as of this time," Tarasov pointed out. "Keep in mind that he had this surgery just a few days ago, and he’s barely able to walk."
On Monday, Tarasov submitted a letter to the warden’s office at the Fort Dix Correctional Institution asking for a full release of Yaroshenko’s medical records related to the surgery.
Yaroshenko was detained in Liberia in 2010 during a US sting operation conducted in West Africa, and was transferred to the United States. The US authorities sentenced him to 20 years in prison on charges of smuggling cocaine.
Russian authorities have repeatedly expressed concern over the circumstances of Yaroshenko's arrest and the poor conditions of his detention.
