Some 51 percent of Democratic voters surveyed in a national poll believe presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is at least "somewhat likely" to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for the US presidency, a Rasmussen Reports opinion survey revealed.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The 51 percent figure compares with 36 percent in September and 23 percent in May, when Sanders officially announced his candidacy, Rasmussen said on Tuesday.

"Recent polls showing Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders surging ahead of Hillary Clinton in key states like Iowa and New Hampshire, but are Democratic voters taking this news seriously?" a press release accompanying the poll asks.

The question stems from the poll’s findings that just 13 percent of Democratic voters consider a Sanders nomination by the Democratic Party "very likely," up from 4 percent in May.

Multiple polls ahead of upcoming votes in the US states of Iowa and New Hampshire have yielded conflicting results in predicting the outcome between the two leading Democratic candidates, Sanders and Clinton. Nevertheless, most surveys show support for Clinton weakening.

Rasmussen’s survey of 1,000 likely US voters was conducted on January 24-25. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
