TOKYO (Sputnik) — According to the foreign minister, he received an invitation to come to Russia during the recent telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"I'm considering visiting Russia in the near future… as early as possible," Byung-se said in an interview with the Yonhap news agency.
"We think it is important to develop South Korea-Russia ties based on their own merits," he added.
The North Korean nuclear issue will also be on the agenda of the visit, as "that's one of our measures to secure Russia's support over the nuclear test."
On January 6, Pyongyang claimed it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb, triggering a wave of condemnation from the international community.
The United Nations previously imposed sanctions on North Korea for three tests it carried out in 2006, 2009 and 2013.
