According to John O'Brennan, a professor of European politics at Ireland's Maynooth University, Denmark's refugee policies are unnecessarily strict, and evoke images of Nazi Germany.

Denmark's seizing of valuables from refugees resembles the policies of Nazi Germany, John O'Brennan, a professor of European politics at Ireland's Maynooth University, told Radio Sputnik.

"This is loaded with symbolism. Given the terrible history in Europe, in close proximity to Denmark, actually, we understand all the symbolism connected to engaging in this way with people who are really poor," O'Brennan told Sputnik.

Denmark Prepares to Enact EU's Toughest Refugee Policy
O'Brennan added that the crisis would not be as severe if other countries, such as Britain, agreed to accept more refugees.

Danish policies have resonated in Norway, where the Norwegian Progress Party (FrP) proposed that the valuables and money of refugees should be taken away on Monday.

Denmark's Foreign Minister Kristian previously said that Denmark's policies adhere to international agreements.

"It will be written into the narrative of Denmark as a country with a right-wing handling of asylum policy. The thing is, yes, we have a right-handed management, but we have also lived up to all the international agreements," Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen told Politiko newspaper.

According to Jensen, the barrage of criticism against the Danish is caused by a misunderstanding, and the world has forgotten how much Denmark does for refugees around the world.
