BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The European Union has allocated only 6 of the 28 patrol ships requested by Athens to monitor external maritime borders, Greek Minister for Migration Policy Ioannis Mouzalas said.
"We asked for 28 ships, they sent six," the Bruxelles2 news portal quoted Mouzalas as saying.
According to the minister, dozens of refugees drowned in the Aegean Sea last week could have been rescued if Brussels satisfied Athens' request in full measure.
According to the International Organization for Migration, over 847,000 refugees from Syria and other countries arrived in Greece by sea in 2015, and more than 800 people have drowned in the Aegean Sea.
