"Members of the Defense Council of Ukraine approved the new military administrative division of the territory of Ukraine, regulating the demarcation of the territory into military and administrative areas in the interest of national defense," the press service said.
The new rules apportion the responsibilities and powers of the command and control units within the Ukrainian Armed Forces on land, air and in maritime defense.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko backed the new zoning, according to his press office, which he said would improve the efficiency of mobilization measures and optimize territorial defense.
The Council has instructed the Ukrainian government to approve a 2020 program to develop weaponry and military equipment by late February.
