"During their meeting, the two president's will discuss our shared efforts to counter ISIL [Daesh] and the global refugee crisis," Earnest stated. "[T]hey will also exchange views on economic developments in Europe, the importance of concluding the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and a variety of other areas of mutual interest."
The White House spokesperson added that Italy was a "valued NATO ally and a close partner on a range of global challenges."
The announcement of the meeting comes as Obama administration officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, are set to travel to Italy to discuss the campaign against Daesh during a ministerial meeting in Rome.
ISIL, also known as Daesh, is a designated terrorist group outlawed in the United States, Russia and many other countries.
At present, the European countries are struggling to find a solution to a massive migrant crisis of millions of individuals seeking to flee the Middle East and North Africa, but also other areas. The migration has raised significant concerns of likely Daesh infiltration.
The European Union border agency Frontex estimates more than 1.5 million illegal border crossings by migrants have taken place in 2015.
