Russia, US Discuss Avoiding of Air Incidents Over Syria - Moscow
11:57 GMT 29.01.2016 (Updated: 10:43 GMT 06.08.2022) Russian and US military representatives held a video conference Thursday, discussing the implementation of the memorandum on avoiding air incidents over Syria, Russia's Defense Ministry said Friday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The sides discussed means to improve cooperation in the framework of the deal, and agreed to continue regular contacts, according to the ministry.
"It was noted that the memorandum helps prevent unintended incidents between Russian aircraft and the US-led coalition," the ministry's press service said in a statement.
28 January 2016, 19:30 GMT
In October, US and Russian officials signed a memorandum of understanding concerning safety procedures for the two countries’ aerial missions in Syria to avoid any conflicts.
A US-led coalition of 65 nations has been bombing Daesh terrorist group's targets in Syria since September 2014, but without the approval of the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
On September 30, 2015, Russia launched its own air campaign against Daesh and al-Nusra terrorists in Syria at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
