MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In the letter sent to the Senate on Friday, Assistant Secretary of Defense Stephen Hedger said that Defense Secretary Ash Carter considered the case closed, according to USA Today newspaper.
Petraeus pled guilty to one misdemeanor count last spring and was sentenced to two years' probation and a $100,000 fine for sharing classified information with Paula Broadwell, including names of covert officers.
The US Army has recommended Defense Secretary Ashton Carter not to reduce Petraeus in rank. Carter reportedly accepted the Army’s recommendation.
If demoted, Petraeus would lose $50,000 in pension cuts from the current $220,000 a year that he is paid as a four-star general.
Petraeus served as CIA director from September 2011 to November 2012. Prior to that assignment, Petraeus served as the Commander in Afghanistan from June 2010 until July 2011.
