GENEVA (Sputnik) — Qadri Jamil added that the Syrian opposition is ready to start the talks without the Kurds, but would immediately insist on their participation in the negotiations.
"We believe their [Kurds] absence contradicts the UNSC decision, as they are an integral part of the of the Syrian opposition," Qadri Jamil said.
"That is why it is unacceptable that they are not part of the delegation. De Mistura should take all the responsibility in the UNSC decision implementation. This is undermining the negotiating process and runs counter to the interest of peace in Syria," Jamil stressed.
On Friday, the highly-anticipated talks on Syrian reconciliation mediated by the United Nations began in the Swiss city in line with the UN Security Council's resolution on Syrian settlement, that ruled to bring the entire spectrum of political groups in the crisis-torn country to the negotiating table. The Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) has not been invited by the United Nations. The PYD accused Ankara of throwing its weight behind the UN decision.
"We insist on equal footing in participation, the number of delegates, and equal powers," Jamil said.
The Syrian opposition delegation formed after coordination meetings in Moscow and Cairo will meet UN's Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura on February 3.
"We are waiting for our friends to join us on Wednesday and I think after that we should be able to meet with UN's Staffan de Mistira. We will try to do it Wednesday evening, but it depends not only on us," Jamil said.
