WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — Following the 2014 reunification of Crimea with Russia, Washington cut military to military ties with Moscow. NATO followed the US lead and unilaterally severed ties with Russia in April 2014.
“We are still in a period of time where our ability to engage in the bilateral discussions that we had in recent years, and indeed that the United States and Soviet Union had, have been curtailed. Those will come back at some point in time,” Miller said when asked about his advice to the next US president on relations with Russia.
Miller, who served under President Barack Obama and indicated he is giving defense policy advice to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, reaffirmed the importance of US-Russia talks “at the most senior levels.”
“Those types of discussions are critically important to reducing the prospects for misunderstandings that could lead to miscalculations that could lead to conflict,” Miller explained.
The US-Russia dialogue should include listening to Russian concerns and "taking them seriously…whether it’s about past American policies, whether there are real arms control violations on missile defense,” Miller added.
