WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — All assets of the sanctioned individuals and entities that are located in the United States or in the possession or control of US persons are frozen, according to the Treasury. Moreover, US nationals are prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.
"The following individuals have been added to OFAC's [Office of Foreign Assets Control] SDN [Specially Designated Nationals] List," the Treasury Department stated, listing Aleksey Anichin, Yevgeni Antonov, Boris Kibis, Pavel Lapshov and Oleg Urzhumtsev.
The Magnitsky Act allowed the Treasury to apply sanctions on dozens of Russian officials believed to be responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky in pre-trial detention. Magnitsky was a Russian lawyer who alleged official corruption at the highest levels of government.
On Monday, the US State Department submitted to Congress the third annual report on the government’s actions to implement the Magnitsky Act. The document includes the list of 39 individuals, sanctioned up to date.
"Persons on this list are ineligible for visas and to be admitted to the United States," the State Department added.
Sergei Magnitsky, a Moscow lawyer and legal consultant for the London-based Hermitage Capital Management investment fund, was detained in 2008 on suspicion of involvement in a tax evasion scheme. Less than a year later, Magnitsky died of heart failure while still in custody. An official investigation closed the criminal case into the death of the lawyer, citing lack of criminal evidence.
