MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iran could play a more prominent role in trade relations with Russia, Alexei Pushkov, a senior Russian lawmaker, said Tuesday.
"As we seek new partners in trade and economic areas in light of the ongoing EU sanctions against Russia, we believe that Iran could take a more prominent place in our trade relations," Pushkov, the head of the foreign affairs committee of the lower house of the Russian parliament, told reporters.
He added that the lifting of international sanctions against Iran provides an opportunity for the strengthening of economic and commercial ties between Moscow and Tehran.
On January 16, Iran met all its requirements for the implementation of the agreement on its nuclear program, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Meeting the agreement’s requirements affords Iran relief from all nuclear-related sanctions imposed against it in recent years.
