MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The conference will gather world leaders in London on Thursday in an attempt to draw attention to the plight of the Syrian people and to raise some $2.2 billion to neighboring countries affected by the refugee crisis.
"The psyche of the Jordanian people, I think it's gotten to boiling point. It hurt us when it comes to the educational system, our healthcare. Sooner or later, I think the dam is going to burst," the king told BBC in an interview.
According to Abdullah, the European countries would face more difficulties in dealing with the refugee crisis if they do not help Jordan, as the kingdom might be unable to accept any more Syrians.
"The international community, we have always stood shoulder to shoulder by your side. We are now asking for your help, you can't say 'no' this time," the king said.
On Sunday, the UN Refugee Agency representation in Jordan announced that some 20,000 Syrian refugees have been stranded on the kingdom's border, while 4,000-5,000 Syrian asylum-seekers enter Jordan each month.
Since 2011, Syria has been mired in a civil war with government forces fighting a number of militant groups and opposition factions. According to the United Nations, an estimated 4.3 million people have fled the country as a result of the civil war.
