UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Refugee women and children make up almost 60 percent of all asylum seekers crossing Greek and Macedonian borders, the UNICEF statement published Tuesday read.
Previously, 73 percent of refugees fleeing conflict-torn regions were men, while accompanied children accounted only for 10 percent of the refugee flow, according to the document.
Europe is currently struggling to cope with a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa in search of safety and refuge in stable and wealthy EU states.
Over one million people arrived in Europe via sea routes in 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration.
