GENEVA (Sputnik) — The Intra-Syrian negotiations in Geneva must not be allowed to fail as they are a mandatory component of UN Security Council resolution on Syrian reconciliation, Syrian opposition figure Qadri Jamil said Wednesday.
"I don't think so. I am optimistic. There are two delegations from the opposition. The talks will continue. Failure is unacceptable, we have to implement the UN Security Council decisions," Jamil told RIA Novosti.
Two opposition groups, comprising the Syrian opposition delegation formed at meetings in Moscow and Cairo and the Riyadh-formed opposition group, are currently attending talks on the settlement of the Syrian conflict in Geneva.
On Friday, the highly-anticipated talks on Syrian reconciliation, mediated by the United Nations, began in the Swiss city in accordance with the UN Security Council's resolution on Syria, that stipulated that the entire spectrum of political groups in the crisis-torn country be brought to the negotiating table.
Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups.
