WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US presidential candidate Donald Trump unleashed a storm of tweets on Wednesday accusing the winner of the Iowa Republican caucus, US Senator Ted Cruz, of stealing the election by telling voters that rival candidate Ben Carson planned to drop out of the race.

"Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he illegally stole it," Trump tweeted.

Trump elaborated in a later tweet that "During primetime of the Iowa Caucus, Cruz put out a release that Ben Carson was quitting the race, and to caucus [vote] for Cruz."

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson was an early favorite in the US presidential race, but experienced a drop in voter support in polls and finished fourth in Monday’s Iowa caucus.

On Tuesday, Cruz issued a statement to CNN saying he had apologized to Carson after his staff put out a false report that Carson planned to quit the race.

Cruz was declared the winner of the Iowa caucus with 27.6 percent of the Republican vote compared with 24.3 percent for Trump. Carson came in fourth place with 9.3 percent.

Carson remains in the US presidential race and there was no immediate response from Cruz.
