TOKYO (Sputnik) – According to the Kyodo news agency, Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said the Japanese military were gathering information about the eruption and would monitor the damage it could potentially cause.
Local police say that there is yet no information about casualties or the extent of the damage caused.
The Sakurajima volcano is located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Sendai nuclear power plant, which was the first nuclear facility to restart one of its reactors in August 2015, after new safety rules were introduced in Japan following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
