MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Maduro spoke in front of his supporters near the Miraflores presidential palace in the capital Caracas on Thursday, stressing that "one way or another" he would not let the opposition to get him to step down.
On Tuesday, lawmakers from the LCR (La Causa Radical, or Radical Cause) party, a member of the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition, proposed to amend Venezuela’s constitution in order to cut Maduro’s mandate by two years.
Venezuela’s opposition MUD group gained a parliamentary majority for the first time in 17 years in the December 6, 2015 elections, gaining 112 of the 167 seats in the National Assembly (the country's parliament).
The opposition victory in Venezuela came amid widespread public discontent with Maduro’s government and the grave economic problems in the country.
A series of protests against high levels of violence, record inflation and shortages of basic goods took place across Venezuela between February and June of 2014. Maduro's government deemed the protests to be coup attempts and arrested a number of opposition leaders.
