WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The pictures, which show bruises, wounds and injuries of the detained people, have been released on Friday under the Freedom of Information lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union in 2004.
The US government repeatedly stated that the release of the photographs may trigger attacks against US forces.
In 2009, Congress passed a law that allows Washington to keep such pictures secret if the government proves that publishing them may be dangerous for US citizens.
Enhanced interrogation techniques were approved by former US President George W. Bush’s administration and included the harsh treatment of detainees at different sites around the world, including Guantanamo Bay, Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, and the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad.
