MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia regrets that the start of the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva were shrouded by the non-constructive positions of some of the opposition figures present at the meeting, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament said Friday.
“We regret very much that the beginning [of the talks] was shrouded, in our view, by the non-constructive position of some who we call the Syrian opposition. Negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition should begin without any sort of preconditions. If you spin the spiral from one side to the other, then the negotiations may just turn into a dead end. It’s necessary to sit at the negotiations table with open eyes and begin talking, only then can the political part of this most difficult Syrian problem be solved,” Sergei Naryshkin said in an interview with RT television.
