"The members of the Security Council strongly condemned this launch, as well as any other DPRK launch that uses ballistic missile technology…even if characterized as a satellite launch… [It] is in a serious violation of the Security Council resolutions 1718 (2006), 1874 (2009), 2087 (2013), 2094 (2013)," Ramirez told reporters after the close of the council's emergency meeting held Sunday.
The council reaffirmed the existence of a continued threat to international security in the light of North Korea's recent nuclear test, he added.
"Members of the security council will adopt…a new security council resolution with such measures in response to this dangerous and serious violation," the president concluded.
Members of the UN Security Council also recalled that they had previously expressed their determination to take further significant measures in the event of another DPRK launch.
Tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs escalated after North Korea stated that it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test on January 6, prompting condemnation from the international community.
